What can I expect?

Every Bowen session ranges from 30-60 minutes and consists of a numbered set of Bowen moves. These are gentle, superficial pulling and rolling of the fascia described on the Find out more page

Bowen is typically performed on skin in a lying down position but can also be completed through clothing, seated, or standing if needed.

This treatment is appropriate for all ages and abilities.

What makes this approach different than other therapies?

Bowen therapy is a holistic centered treatment. We treat the whole body system as a way to facilitate positive change in the areas that need it most. Bringing the body back into a balanced homeostasis allows it to do the healing on it's own.

How many sessions should I need?

Although some people may feel significant change after 1-2 sessions this is most commonly related to acute injuries or flare-ups. It can take 3-6 sessions to show significant improvement for most people who are dealing with ongoing pain or inflammation.

The first Bowen session consists of what we call our 3 "basic relaxation movements". These collections of moves hold the foundations of Bowenwork® by specifically targeting the nervous system and major muscle groups to have a systemic effect. They aim to rebalance the body and return it to a parasympathetic state while also preparing the body for future Bowen therapy. Subsequent visits would include some of these body balancing moves along with 1 or more procedures specific to the target area.

What to know after a session

The body continues integrating this work for up to 10 days after a session is received. It is important in this time to be mindful of what your body is exposed to as to receive the most benefits from your treatment.

The 3 Ws

Walk: keep the body moving without stressing out the fascial system with extensive exercise

Water: drink plenty of water to help replenish the fluids in your fascia

Wait: if symptoms return please refrain from receiving any other therapy 5 days after a session, including self-massage

What to avoid

There are some things that can interfere with the body's integrating of this work and should be avoided for 5 days after a session

1. Other therapies: massage, chiropractic, osteopathy, physio, acupuncture, and energy work

2. Hot and cold: heating pads, hot tubs, warm baths, ice packs, etc.

*heating/cooling ointments are okay*

3. Alcohol: as to prevent dehydration, if choosing to drink ensure to replenish with lots of water during and after

When to rebook

Clients usually receive the most benefit from revisiting 1-2 weeks after a session.

Only in specific cases would we want someone to be retreated within 7 days of their previous visit.
